Piano Movers in Toronto
Moving a piano is not a regular move
A piano is the heaviest, most awkward, and often the most valuable single item in a home. An upright can weigh 500 pounds or more; a grand concentrates that weight on three legs that were never designed to carry it sideways. The finish scratches, the legs snap, and the soundboard and action can be damaged by a drop of a few inches or a bad angle on a staircase.
Moving ASAP has moved pianos across Toronto and the GTA since 2012 — uprights in downtown condos, baby grands in Scarborough and North York houses, and full household moves where the piano is one part of a much bigger day. Our crews speak English and Bengali, and we work 24/7, including evenings and weekends when a building’s elevator is actually available.
How piano moving is priced — with the actual numbers
Piano pricing has three parts:
- Labour. When a piano is part of a household move, labour is charged at our standard moving rates: 2 movers $130/hour, 3 movers $190/hour. For a piano-only move, the applicable labour rate is confirmed in your individual quote. Whether your piano needs two movers or three is decided at the assessment, never assumed.
- A piano handling fee, by type: upright $150 · baby grand $300 · grand $350. This covers the specialist handling a piano requires beyond regular furniture moving. It is one line of the price — not the whole price.
- No second charge for the piano’s weight. A piano is heavy, and its handling fee already covers that: the standard $30 heavy-item charge does not apply on top of a piano handling fee.
- The truck fee: a flat $160 (it may vary depending on the distance of your move or the service location — your written quote states your fee before you approve it).
Minimums: a piano-only booking has a 2-hour minimum. When a piano is part of a full household move, the standard 3-hour minimum applies to the move as a whole.
HST (13%) is added on top of the lines above, and your written quote shows each line before you approve it.
What your quote depends on — and what to send us
The more of this you can tell us up front, the more accurate your quote is:
- The piano: type (upright, baby grand, grand, digital), make and model if you know it, and its approximate height or length.
- The pickup: stairs (how many, and any turns or landings), elevator (and whether it must be booked), long hallways or carries, parking for the truck.
- The destination: the same access details, plus where in the room the piano is going.
- Photos of the piano and the route — a phone photo of a staircase answers questions a description can’t.
- The date, and whether the piano is moving on its own or as part of a household move.
Send these with the quote form on this page, or call (647) 540-1453 and talk them through.
We move all piano types — uprights, baby grands, and grands. Access is reviewed before we confirm any piano booking, because a piano that cannot be moved safely on the day helps no one.
How we move your piano
- Assessment first. We review the piano and both routes before moving day and build the plan — crew size, disassembly, and timing — around what we find.
- Preparation. The lid and fallboard are closed and secured. On grand pianos, the legs and pedal lyre are removed and packed separately.
- Protection. The piano is wrapped in padded moving blankets and secured with straps. Floors on the route are protected with floor runners before anything moves. (Blankets, shrink wrap, and floor runners are included in our standard hourly service.)
- The move. The crew moves the piano on piano dollies, using shoulder straps for lifts and stair carries — controlled, even movements, no dragging.
- Placement. At the destination the piano is unloaded, reassembled where it was taken apart, and placed where you want it, with the route protection removed after.
- After delivery. Let the piano settle in its new room before booking a tuning — a change of temperature and humidity affects tuning, and a tuner will get a better result once the instrument has acclimated.
Uprights, baby grands, and grands — what changes
- Upright pianos move in one piece, padded and strapped to a dolly. They are the simplest piano move, but at 500+ pounds they are never a casual lift on stairs without a plan.
- Baby grand pianos are partially disassembled — legs, pedals, and music desk removed and packed — then the body is moved on its side.
- Grand pianos follow the same process with more weight, more length, and less tolerance for tight turns. Staircases and corners are measured at the assessment, not discovered on the day.
- Digital pianos and keyboards are lighter but fragile: screens, keys, and finishes are wrapped and packed so nothing bears weight on the keys.
One booking: piano, household, and storage
A specialist piano company can only move the piano. If you are moving house, Moving ASAP can move the piano and the rest of your home in one booking, with one crew and one quote — and if your new place isn’t ready, the piano can go into storage with the rest of your belongings and be delivered when you are. Storage is priced by individual quote — tell us what needs storing and for roughly how long, and we’ll quote it with your move.
If something goes wrong
Moving ASAP is licensed and maintains liability insurance. If anything is damaged on a move with us, you can file a claim directly at our claims page: File a claim. Claims are reviewed by a designated team — some are handled internally and others through insurance, depending on the claim.
Piano moving in Toronto — questions and answers
Q: How much does it cost to move a piano in Toronto?
A: A handling fee by piano type — upright $150, baby grand $300, grand $350 — plus the flat $160 truck fee, plus 13% HST, plus labour. When the piano is part of a household move, labour is at our standard rates (2 movers $130/hour, 3 movers $190/hour); for a piano-only move, the applicable labour rate is confirmed in your individual quote. A piano-only booking has a 2-hour minimum. Your total depends on the piano, the crew size the assessment sets, and the access. For an assessment and quote: (647) 540-1453.
Q: Why do you publish the parts instead of one flat price?
A: We publish our piano handling fees, standard truck fee and applicable HST. The truck fee may vary depending on distance and service location. Your individual quote confirms the applicable labour rate and itemized charges before you approve your move.
Q: Can two movers move my piano?
A: Sometimes, for a small upright on a simple route — but it is decided at the assessment, not promised in advance. A piano that needs three movers and gets two is how instruments and people get hurt.
Q: How do I prepare my piano for moving day?
A: Remove everything from the top and inside the bench, close and latch the lid, and clear the route — hallways, doors, and the path to the truck. Tell us about stairs, tight turns, and elevator booking rules when you request the quote, and book the elevator for the window we agree on.
Q: When should I tune the piano after the move?
A: Let it acclimate to the new room first — moving between buildings changes temperature and humidity, and tuning before the piano settles wastes the tuning. Your tuner can advise on timing; build the wait into your plans rather than booking the tuner for moving day.
Q: Can you move the piano and the rest of my home together?
A: Yes — one crew, one booking, one quote. Tell us the piano is part of a household move when you request the quote so the plan and crew are sized for both.
Q: What if my piano is damaged during the move?
A: File a claim through our claims page. Claims are reviewed by a designated team; some are handled internally and others through insurance.
